5 tips for law students

We invite you to learn about the recommendations of a legal professional for law students who want to complete their degree without failing in the attempt Law tutor.

Without a doubt, studying to be a law expert is not easy. Diego Vigil De Quiñones Otero, Spanish lawyer graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, in his book Brief tips for studying Law successfully establishes, as one of his first recommendations, that students should “accept that Law is difficult.” But you don't have to get discouraged. The author believes that by following certain useful advice the student can finish his degree without having to suffer. Below, we share some of the recommendations that Vigil de Quiñones offers:

1. Study in a group

Seek the collaboration of friends, professionals and teachers. Group work is essential for professional growth and career success.

2. Visualize the Law in reality

While the theories and norms presented in class resemble straight and univocal lines, this rigidity is not usually found in reality, which is much more complex and diverse. Therefore, it is necessary for law students to place what they study in reality as soon as possible, through work with particular cases. Coming into contact with documents such as contracts, lawsuits or sentences is essential to understand how theory is translated into reality.

3. Know the fundamentals of the subjects

To be successful in exams it is key to know how to distinguish what is essential in each subject. Vigil de Quiñones recommends “putting yourself in the teacher's place” to detect what he or she wants from the students, what he or she will ask, and these should know.

When you study a certain institution, before studying a lot of data by heart, really try to understand what it is, what it intends and what is essential about it, that is, its common nerve. This will make it much easier for you to avoid blanking out when the teacher asks.

4. Relate the subjects to each other

As you progress in your career, you will realize that in Law everything is interconnected, since it is about the norm that regulates coexistence between all people. Different legal norms and institutions cannot exist completely independently. It is then necessary to see them as part of a whole that lives in harmony, in order to take knowledge obtained in some subjects and apply it in others.

5. Learn to express yourself well

Language is the main tool of a lawyer. The law student must double or triple the vocabulary that he used in his high school days. To do this, he studies from the best books and never ignores an unknown word without searching and learning its meaning.
